We will work predominantly in South Leeds and surrounding areas.

Introducing the dance form Baratnatyam and YAKSHAGANA-THEATRE This activity has never been done before. Its an ancient Dance form originating in India . Bharatnatyam maybe the oldest classical dance form in the world. We want to revive this art form via workshops and events as it has the diversity of dances and performance. Its what ballet has been in the West.

Bharatnatyam style is noted for its fixed upper torso, legs bent or knees flexed out combined with spectacular footwork, a sophisticated footwork, a sophisticated vocabulary of sign language based on gestures of hand, eyes and face muscles.

We will work via workshops, community events led by Devika Rao who is an expert artist in Bharatnatyam and work in different sectors For example the Middleton Elderly aid, Oulton Harold hall.

How will the activity benefit the community?
The community will benefit by practicing this mythical and beautiful Dance form for learning a skill and passing it on, for relaxation abilities, physical and mental healing with movements. It will also benefit to bring people of different communities (the Pakistani/Bangladeshis/ The Elderly predominantly white community of Middleton, Oulton , Hunslet and surrounding areas)/ different ages / different backgrounds on the same platform through the dance form. It will lead to increased awareness and better understanding.

This will benefit the elderly and the youth to feel more involved and less isolated. We have done research and interviews and found it an interesting and fun filled activity which appeals to the masses. The local community will benefit as they will develop a skill and it will enhance confidence while having an enjoyable experience. More people and a wider range of people will have engaged and have better understanding
